Where Smallmouth Bass Actually Sit in Kentucky

Dudes, smallmouth are not largemouth. They’re also a lot more fun to catch because they put up a hell of a fight. If you fish them the same way, you’re going to get frustrated.

Smallmouth like cleaner water, current, and rock

Not muddy banks and random cover.

Where to Start

Rivers

  • Elkhorn Creek (1 mile short of being classified as a river)

  • Green River (upper sections)

  • Cumberland River

The Local Move

Fish rock transitions with current.

A Ned rig, tube, or small swimbait works best. Cast upstream or across current and let it drift like real food.

Gravel to chunk rock and rock to ledge

That’s where they sit.

What Most Guys Do Wrong

They fish calm water.

Smallmouths want movement. Not chaos. Just enough current to bring food.

Lakes

Look at:

Lake Cumberland and Laurel River Lake

Fish points with rock and depth nearby.

The Pattern

  • Currents with moving water (riffles, runs, drop-offs)

  • Rocky or gravelly bottoms for cover and prey

  • Shallow to moderate depths (1–15 ft)

  • Clear, cool, oxygen-rich water

If you don’t have all three, keep moving.
