What Size Generator Do I Need?

What Size Generator Do I Need?

Alright Dudes, let’s talk about something we don’t think about until it’s too late, power outages.

One good ice storm, windstorm, or a squirrel with an attitude problem, and suddenly you’re sittin’ in the dark like it’s 1842, wondering how long your phone flashlight is gonna last.

I could make the case that everybody in Kentucky needs a generator.

I don’t care if you live in the city, out on the farm, or “borrowing Wi-Fi from the neighbors”, sooner or later the lights are goin’ out.

And trust me, you’ll look like the smartest man in the county when you fire up that generator and keep the fridge cold, the lights on, and maybe even the game running on TV.

Now, what size do you need?

The short answer: bigger than you think. The long answer: it depends on how fancy you wanna be.

  • Want to keep the essentials (fridge, lights, phone charger)? You can get by with about 5,000 watts.

  • Want to run the fridge, lights, AND the heat so you don’t freeze in January / February? You’re looking at 7,500–10,000 watts.

  • Want to live like the power never even went out? Buddy, you’re talking whole-house standby generator territory. That’s the Cadillac option.

Bottom line: any generator is better than none.

It’s like bourbon, you don’t have to get the most expensive bottle, but you’ll sure be glad you’ve got some when the storm hits.

So do yourself a favor, quit rolling the dice with Kentucky weather, and get a generator before you need one.

When the next blackout comes, you’ll be the guy handing out cold drinks while everyone else is freezing in the dark.
