Dad Joke of the Week

How do you make a tissue dance?

(scroll to the end for the answer)

This Week in Kentucky History

In March 2010, the first episode of the TV series Justified premiered. The show followed U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens back to his roots in Harlan County, Kentucky. The series turned Appalachian slang, coal country culture, and Kentucky backroads into prime-time television. And for six seasons people around the country suddenly learned what a “holler” was. Yah for Kentucky.

Oliver’s Questions

Turns out, our main source of inspiration for many articles is a pint-sized, 10-year-old dude (my son) who thinks he's got all the answers, forcing me into a constant state of fact-checking.

what was the Nirvana smiley face?

Kentucky Dude Original, 1-minute read

You’ve seen it everywhere, a goofy, slightly twisted grin paired with X‑eyes that somehow became a fashion staple in the 90’s. But what’s the real story behind this strange face? We did the research to uncover a rock mystery with no clear answer…

men's taper vs. fade haircut

Kentucky Dude original, 1-minute read

At some point, every guy hears the question, “Taper or fade?” Most nod confidently… while secretly having no idea what the difference is. Before your next barber visit turns into a guessing game, here’s the surprisingly interesting story behind the two most common haircuts in the world.

Man on the Move

Your Brain Thinks You’re “Due.” It’s Lying.

Dude, humans hate randomness.

We want patterns. Balance. Justice. A scoreboard somewhere in the universe keeps things fair.

Flip a coin five times, and it lands heads every time. Your brain instantly whispers:
“Tails has to be next.”

It doesn’t. This thinking trap is called the Gambler’s Fallacy.

It’s the belief that past random events influence future random events. If something hasn’t happened in a while, we assume it’s “due.”

But probability doesn’t work that way. A coin doesn’t remember the last flip. A roulette wheel doesn’t remember the last spin. And luck isn’t trying to even things out.

You’ll hear this fallacy everywhere: “Red hasn’t hit in ten spins”, “this team can’t keep losing”, “I’m due for a good break”.

Nope. Randomness has no memory.

Here’s the Move: Next time you feel the urge to say something is “due,” pause and ask one question.

Does the next outcome actually depend on the previous one?

If the answer is no, you’re probably watching your brain invent a pattern that doesn’t exist.

Once you see it, you’ll notice it everywhere.

Why It Matters: Believing you’re “due” leads to bad bets, stubborn decisions, and chasing losses.

Understanding randomness doesn’t make you lucky.

It just makes you harder to fool.

10 old fishing sayings Kentucky anglers still swear by

Kentucky Dude Original, 1-minute read

Fishermen love their sayings. The kind passed down at boat ramps, bait shops, and campfires. Not because they sound clever, but because they usually work. From blooming redbuds to lying cows, Kentucky anglers have been reading nature for generations… and some of those old sayings might be the best fishing tips you’ll ever hear.

Bourbon, Brews, & THC

how to infuse your own bourbon at home

Kentucky Dude Original, 1-minute read

Somewhere between “just one pour” and “I could totally make this better,” a dangerous idea begins to form. Kentucky garages have quietly turned into bourbon laboratories for less. The results are surprisingly good… and occasionally a little reckless.
