Family First
This week, we're focusing on building strong family bonds. Dads, check out the fantastic resources available on Fatherly to find fun activities and tips for connecting with your kids.
The key to spending time and creating lasting family bonds does not mean you have to spend every waking hour with your kids, but I like to use an adage I heard a long time ago. Small deposits over time are always preferred over large amounts of time at one time.
To create meaningful time with your kids:
Value everyday moments (like meals or chores)
Be fully present
Keep a positive attitude
TIP: Kids don't need scheduled "quality time" - they just need an engaged parent.

Pope’s Full-Court Press… for Gas: Coach Left Dribbling at the Pump!
Apparently it wasn’t Mark Pope that ran out of gas this morning in downtown Lexington, it was his wife, Lee Anne. 😂
He says he and some graduate assistants rushed down there to bring gas and save the day.

Bourbon & Brews
Ever wonder how smooth Kentucky bourbon gets its flavor? The distilling process involves cooking grains, fermenting the mash, distilling the liquid, aging it in oak barrels, and bottling it. It's a long journey from grain to glass, but the result is worth the wait. Bourbon must age at least two years in a char-oak wooden barrel to be considered bourbon.
Buffalo Trace Distillery is a Kentucky staple, renowned for its wide range of bourbons. Here are a few of their current offerings:
Buffalo Trace: A classic Kentucky bourbon with vanilla, caramel, and oak notes. (Link to Buffalo Trace website
Eagle Rare: A small-batch bourbon known for its smooth taste and hints of leather and spice.
Pappy Van Winkle: A highly sought-after, limited-edition bourbon known for its incredible complexity and flavor.
And for the rest of their lineup: Buffalo Trace's list of bourbon
Looking for something a bit more hoppy? Kentucky also boasts a thriving craft beer scene. Check out these local breweries:
West Sixth Brewing: Known for its innovative and flavorful beers, like its popular IPA "Punk Rock Jesus. West Sixth Beer Lineup
Flywheel Brewing: Offers a variety of styles, from classic IPAs and stouts to unique seasonal brews. Their fall lineup might include pumpkin beers, spiced ales, or autumnal brown ales. Keep an eye on their website for updates! (Link to Flywheel Brewing website)

Man on the Move

Building perseverance is critical to achieving your goals. This week, we recommend two excellent books that explore the power of sticking it out:
Grit by Angela Duckworth: This book delves into the concept of grit, a combination of passion and perseverance, and how it can lead to success.
Great things are accomplished not by strength, but by perseverance.
Unbearable- Embrace the Suck by Stephanie Cacioppo and Martin M Seligman: This book explores the concept of "learned helplessness" and how to overcome it by developing resilience.
Outdoor Life & Fitness
🦌 Crescent Moon, Active Bucks: Pre-Rut Alert!
The moon is a beautiful waxing crescent, increasing deer activity and the pre-rut/early rut. Bucks are beginning to establish dominance and search for does during this time. They may be more active and territorial, traveling greater distances and engaging in sparring matches.
Key characteristics of the pre-rut and early rut phases include:
Increased buck activity: Bucks are more likely to be seen during the day as they search for does and establish dominance.
Grunting and snorting: Bucks may vocalize to attract does or challenge other bucks.
Rubbing and scraping: Bucks will rub their antlers on trees and scrape the ground to mark their territory.
Chasing does: Bucks may begin to chase does, but breeding activity is usually limited during this phase.
TIP: Tip: Set up near buck rubs and scrapes, as these areas are hotspots during the pre-rut. Use grunting calls to attract bucks, capitalizing on their increased vocalization as they search for does.
Bucks will become even more active and focused on breeding as the rut progresses. However, the waxing crescent moon can provide hunters with a good opportunity to observe and possibly harvest a buck during the pre-rut or early rut phase. Expected run times in Kentucky. (more here)
💪🏼 Fitness in Kentucky: Testosterone is the secret sauce in the recipe for men's health, influencing muscle mass, energy levels, mood, and overall vitality. Think of it as your body's best cheerleader, essential for maintaining bone density and ensuring your sexual health and performance are top-notch. So, if you want to feel like a true champion, keeping those testosterone levels in check is key!
To support healthy testosterone levels, Dr. Tracy Gapin recommends incorporating healthy fats into your diet, such as extra virgin olive oil, which has been shown to increase testosterone levels by up to 17%.
TIP: And remember, if natural testosterone-boosting methods don’t do the trick, there’s always testosterone replacement therapy—because who doesn’t want to be a little more vital?
