The First Step: Walking Your Way to a Healthier Life
We Kentuckians love our cars. It’s a driving culture through and through.
But having visited so many different states and countries where people walk more, I saw the power of getting on your feet.
It’s the simplest form of exercise and the most accessible.
You don't need a gym or a fancy workout routine to improve your health.
The true benefit of walking isn't about hitting a mythical 10,000-step count; it’s about moving more throughout your day. But I would say, you should try to target 10,000 - 12,000 steps each day.
A simple stroll can lower blood pressure, improve your cardiovascular health, and clear your head. It's a low-impact way to de-stress.
Getting your steps in, Kentucky style, is easy.
Walk the dog, take a stroll after dinner, turn errands into a walking opportunity, or don’t wait 5 minutes for someone to pull out of the closes parking spot to the entrance of Kroger’s…park towards the back of the parking lot.
You can make a game of it by tracking your progress with a fitness app or watch, which provides a tangible goal and a little friendly competition.
The most important thing is to start. The first step is often the one that makes all the difference.
